CAROL DOREY STONE

My art is mainly focused on Goddess figures. I am continually doing research on how the female is represented in mythology, archeology, religion, society, etc. I sometimes work with traditional goddess representations: pots with breasts, earth mother/fertility figures, etc.; but I also like to try to represent the everyday goddess -- the working woman/mother.

My Goddess of Oreo-Vessel of Comfort is an approximately 12" high pit-fired vessel with breasts. I try to represent the female as warm, loving and comforting, which is why I chose a pit-fired finish. For exhibits I fill it with Oreo cookies because I was such a bad baker that when my children saw me digging out the cookie sheets they'd yell, "No, No, Please buy Oreo's"! This is definitely an autobiographical piece!

I currently work in the Marketing Department at Brandano Displays, an exciting company that makes outdoor light displays. They are responsible for many dazzling displays across the country including "Festival of Lights" (Niagara Falls, NY), "River of Lights" (Albuquerque, NM), "Holiday Lights at the Zoo" (West Palm Beach, Florida) "Lights on the Lake" (Syracuse, NY) and Graceland!!

I have a small studio in my home in Syracuse, New York (Stone Studio) where I design and make porcelain pins and ornaments, stoneware garden bugs and other production products to support my habit -- Art!!

Although I have a BFA from Syracuse University (where I was privileged to study under Margie Hughto and David MacDonald), I continue to take ceramic classes. I joined the Syracuse Ceramic Guild in order to surround myself with talented ceramic artists who love clay and are willing to share their recipes, secrets and knowledge with me. I am a very busy person, but I am having a wonderful time surrounding myself with art. To quote Snoopy: "At Times Life is Pure Joy"!
